Obverse

Do ggae bi features on the battle shield of Chiwoo Cheonwang on the obverse of the 2019 South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang 10 oz Silver Medal. This grotesque figure is said to have the power to ward off evil spirits and was not only used on Chiwoo’s battle shield, but also by normal Korean people to defend their homes.

Reverse

Chiwoo Cheonwang is featured on the reverse face of the 2019 South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang Silver Medal. His figure depicted here is standing on the ground after a hard-fought battle. Chiwoo is surveying the battlefield after his victory with his helmet off, sword standing on its tip with his left hand clutching it, and his battle shield resting at his side in his right hand.

History

Chiwoo Cheonwang is known to Korean people as the God of War and said to have the power to control the elements during war, often summoning dense fog and rain to confuse his enemies and give his forces the upper hand. These characteristics originate with the actual figure of Chiwoo who was one of the founders of the original three tribes of China. He reportedly went through a decade of warfare without losing a battle.
