Obverse

On the obverse of 2019 South Korean Tiger 1/10 oz Gold Medals is a depiction of the Korean tiger. Better known as the Siberian tiger species, the last Korean tiger in the wild died in 1921 when it was killed by hunters. The tiger on this design field growls ferociously and uses one of its paws to rip gashes down the vertical length of the design element.

Reverse

The reverse side of 2019 South Korean Tiger Gold Medals features an image of the Korean peninsula. In this design, the letters of the Hangul are used to form the shape of the Korean peninsula. Hangul is the Korean alphabet and is not the only uniquely Korean element in the design of these 2019 South Korean Tiger Gold Medals. To the left of the peninsula is the taeguk, the official national emblem of South Korea as featured on the national flag.

History

Korean tigers are, in reality, the Siberian tiger species. The animals are the largest predatory cats in the world, but the Siberian is no longer found on the Korean peninsula. The last remaining members of the species on the Korean peninsula were killed by hunters and military forces in the early 20th century when Imperial Japan invaded and colonized the Korean peninsula.
