Many people will confuse the bobcat with the lynx when first spotting it in the wild. While the two do look similar, the bobcat actually more closely resembles a common housecat. Smaller than the lynx, a bobcat has short ear tufts, spotted fur, and a white splash of fur on its bobbed tail that is visible when it runs. While the lynx is found throughout Canada, the bobcat is limited to the southern reaches of the nation as its smaller paws make it difficult for it to traverse the deeper snowpacks the lynx easily moves through in the north.

Obverse

On the obverse of each 2020 Canadian Bobcat 1 oz Gold Coin is Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in a design created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt for the Royal Canadian Mint. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Elizabeth II, 2020, D.G. Reverse

The reverse face of 2020 Canadian Bobcat 1 oz Gold Coins comes with the left-profile bust of a bobcats face. The bobcats telltale tufts near its ears are easily visible as it yowls into the winds of the Canadian wilderness. While the bobcat will most commonly purr, his, or snarl as a vocalization, it is known to yowl loudly during its mating season as a means of attracting a mate and signaling to others that it is in the area. This side of the coin has the maple leaf privy mark the RCM uses as a security feature.

History

The Call of the Wild Series from the Royal Canadian Mint launched in 2014 with the Howling Wolf. There is one new design released each year with available coins to date including the Growling Cougar, Roaring Grizzly, Bugling Elk, Screeching Golden Eagle, and the Moose.
