The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 authorized the United States Mint and Treasury Department to produce an official gold bullion coin. Launched in 1986, the American Eagle Gold Coins feature 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. Today, you can purchase the 2020 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin from Provident Metals.
American Eagle gold bullion coins were the purest gold coins produced by the United States Mint in over 152 years when introduced in 1986. The US Mint lowered gold coin purity below 22-karat content in 1834 and by 1837 all of its coins had a flat .900, or 90%, gold content from 1837 to 1933. The American Eagle Gold coins have 22-karat gold content.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty design from the iconic $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin features on the American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins. This image depicts Liberty in front-facing relief with a large torch held aloft in her right hand and an olive branch outstretched in her left hand. Rays of sunshine emanate from behind her figure and a circle of 50 stars rings the outer edge of the design field.
Miley Busiek created the reverse design for the 2020 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins in 1986. An accomplished sculptor and artist, Ms. Busiek designed a field with a male eagle in flight over the family nest. Within the nest, a female eagle extends her wing to shelter a young hatchling.
American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins have 91.67% gold content. The remainder of the metallic content consists of 3% silver and 5.33% copper. These 1/2 oz gold coins from the American Eagle Series have the lowest mintage figures in the series. The 2018 coins, for example, sold just 32,000 1/2 oz coins compared to 62,000 for the 1/4 oz and 230,000 for the 1/10 oz.
