Obverse

For the obverse, 2020 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins feature the Saint-Gaudens Liberty design. It depicts Liberty in a manner never done prior to 1907 in which she is a free figure with a long, flowing robe and her hair down. She holds a large torch over her head in her right hand and her outstretched left hand clutches a large olive branch. The US Capitol Building is visible at her feet, with rays of sunshine framing her figure from behind and a circle of 50 stars around the very outer rim of the design field.

Reverse

On the reverse, 2020 American Eagle Gold Coins feature a family of American bald eagles and their nest. The male eagle is depicted flying over the nest as the female guards over a young hatchling with her wing extended for the young eagle. This design is exclusive to the American Eagle Gold Coins and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek.

History

President Theodore Roosevelt launched an initiative in 1905 to redesign all American coinage. This initiative would carry on well beyond his administration to that of President Woodrow Wilson and see nearly all denominations refreshed. President Roosevelt personally appealed to Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create this Liberty design, which would later appear on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
