Highlights:
The 1986 introduction of American Eagle Gold Coins marked the first time in 152 years that the US Mint has issued gold coins with 22-karat gold content. Known as crown gold, this alloy consists of 91.67% gold content and a mixture of copper and silver. The composition of the coin between these two metals is split with 5.33% copper and 3% silver.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 2020 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the US Mint to use on circulation gold coins, the image features Liberty walking in front-facing relief with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other hand. Her figure is surrounded by 50 stars representing each of the US states and you will find the US Capitol Building in the design field at her feet.
Reverse
The reverse face of 2020 American Eagle Gold Coins comes with a family of American bald eagles. In the design field, a male eagle flies over the nest while a female eagle shelters a young hatchling under her wing. This image was created in 1986 specifically for the American Eagle Gold Coins.
History
American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins are one of the two lowest-minted coins in the series along with the 1/2 oz gold coin. The 1/2 oz gold coin has had the lowest mintage figure in each year since 1986 with the exception of seven times. Those years include a six-year run from 2002-2007 in which the 1/2 oz gold coin outsold the 1/4 oz.
