The 1986 introduction of American Eagle Gold Coins marked the first time in 152 years that the US Mint has issued gold coins with 22-karat gold content. Known as crown gold, this alloy consists of 91.67% gold content and a mixture of copper and silver. The composition of the coin between these two metals is split with 5.33% copper and 3% silver.
Obverse

Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the US Mint to use on circulation gold coins, the image features Liberty walking in front-facing relief with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other hand. The reverse face of 2020 American Eagle Gold Coins comes with a family of American bald eagles. In the design field, a male eagle flies over the nest while a female eagle shelters a young hatchling under her wing. This image was created in 1986 specifically for the American Eagle Gold Coins.
History
American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins are one of the two lowest-minted coins in the series along with the 1/2 oz gold coin. The 1/2 oz gold coin has had the lowest mintage figure in each year since 1986 with the exception of seven times. Those years include a six-year run from 2002-2007 in which the 1/2 oz gold coin outsold the 1/4 oz.
