Obverse
Walking Liberty as it features on the obverse of the 2020 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin was designed by Adolph A. Weinman. This image was created in 1916 by Weinman for a US Mint and Treasury Department artistic contest seeking new designs for American silver coinage. Weinmans Liberty design featured on the half dollar from 1916 to 1947.
Reverse
The heraldic eagle of the United States is the oldest coin design still in use by the United States Mint. It was first designed in 1794 by Robert Scot, the 1st Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. This version of the emblem was modified for the American Eagle Silver Coins in 1986 by John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint who held the role from 2006 to 2010.
History
All American Eagle coins have historic designs of Liberty on the obverse. The American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins are not the only ones with a design from Adolph A. Weinman either. The American Eagle Palladium coin uses his Winged Liberty design from the Mercury Dime. The American Eagle Gold Coin features Augustus Saint-Gaudens Liberty image from the $20 Gold Double Eagle.
