After several failed attempts to establish a colony in the New World, with Jamestown only barely surviving its first winters, Puritan separatists from England set out to establish a new colony in which they could pursue their own religious beliefs. The Mayflower first set out from London in July 1620. The ship sailed down the Thames to the open sea and navigated along the coast to Southampton. Here, the Mayflower met up with the Speedwell carrying additional Puritan separatists that had been living in Holland. The two ships set out for the New World, but a leak in the Speedwell forced them back to Dartmouth, England, in August 1620. By September, the Mayflower had to set sail alone and had transferred all of the Puritans onboard for the journey.

Obverse

The Mayflower is shown sailing across the open ocean on the obverse of the 2020 Antique Rwandan Mayflower Nautical Ounce 1 oz Silver Coins. Mayflower was built in the style of a Dutch fluyt. A fluyt was a common ship design that originated in the Dutch Republic in the 16^th century that was designed to maximize space on the ship for both cargo and crew. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include Nautical Ounce, 2020, 1 oz Fine Silver 999, and Mayflower in the waves at the bottom of the design.

Reverse

Rwandas coat of arms is featured on the reverse of 2020 Antique Rwandan Mayflower Nautical Ounce 1 oz Silver Coins. The coat of arms features a clay pot at the center with plants of sorghum and coffee on either side. The entire shield is flanked by traditional battle shields. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Banki Nkuru YU Rwanda, Amafaranga Mirongo Itanu, and 50.

History

The Rwandan Nautical Ounce Series features one design release per year with the image of a ship celebrating a major historical anniversary. In this case, the 2020 release of the Mayflower marks 400 years since the ship set sail.
