The Republic of Armenia features Noahs ark prominently on its national bullion coinage due to the nations connection to Christianity and Mount Ararat. The biblical flood of Genesis tells Christians that Noahs ark came to rest on top of Mount Ararat when the floodwaters subsided. Mount Ararat was historically within the borders of Armenias historic kingdoms. Following World War I, its borders were redrawn and the mountain moved into Turkish territory by the realignment.

Obverse

Armenias coat of arms is featured on the obverse side of 2020 Armenian Noahs Ark 1 Gram Gold Coins. The design was adopted in 1992 and reflects the ancient history of Armenia, as well as its modern existence. The quartered shield features eagles and lions, with the shield itself supported by an eagle on the left and a lion on the right. These symbols predate the birth of Christ and reach back to the ancient Armenian kingdoms. The shield of Mount Ararat with Noahs ark in the center of the design dates to the era of Armenia as a Soviet Republic. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include the Geiger Edelmetalle LEV rhombus, the weight, purity, metal content, and face value, as well as the words Republic of Armenia in English and Armenian.

Reverse

Noahs ark as designed by Eduard Kurghinyan is found on the reverse of the 2020 Armenian Noahs Ark 1 Gram Gold Coins. The design field includes Noahs ark on the floodwaters with a dove in the foreground and the sun rising over Mount Ararat in the background field. The words Noahs Ark are inscribed in both English and Armenian on this face of the coin.

History

Armenian Noahs Ark Silver coins debuted in 2011 with 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz silver. In 2012, it expanded to included 5 oz, 10 oz, 1 Kilo, and 5 Kilo coins. 2020 brings the debut of the gold version of the coin, with these 1 Gram gold coins offered alongside 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz gold.
