History

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve represents a new kind of national park in the United States. Establishment of the park as a federally-protected site was actually met with resistance locally in Kansas as local landowners and citizens did not want to relinquish control of the land to the federal government. Established in November 1996, Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is the only national park that is managed federally by the National Park Service, but the 10,894 acres of the park are owned privately.
