Ing Ing Jong, famed for her work in the Lunar Series II collection starting in 2013, created the image of the Double Pixiu used on the reverse of the coins in this series.
Obverse
The obverse field of the 2020 Australian Guardian Lions Double Pixiu Coin bears a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. This design was created in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint of England and adapted for use on Australian coins starting in 2018. The image shows in the Queen in right-profile relief and is the first Australian portrait since 1966 to depict the queen with her neckline and shoulders visible in the design field.
Reverse
On the reverse face of 2020 Australian Guardian Lions Double Pixiu 1 oz Silver Coins is the image of a pixiu pair. These powerful creatures have the body of a lion and the head of a dragon. The pixiu is said to have an insatiable appetite for gold, silver, and jewels and is viewed as a symbol of wealth. This pair sits atop a mound of Ancient Chinese coins, with the pixiu on the left clutching a ball and the one on the right holding a club.
History
The pixiu is believed to crave the smell of gold and silver. It is believed the beast would bring gold and silver to its master in its mouth. Statues of the creatures are popularly used in Feng Shui as both a powerful protective symbol and as an item that draws in wealth.
