One of the many great sailing mysteries of the 18th century was the Zuytdorp, a Dutch East India Company vessel that disappeared after arriving at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa in March 1712. After taking on 100 new crew members, the Zuytdorp departed for Batavia and was never seen again above the surface of the ocean. Today, you have the opportunity to get 2020 Australian Shipwreck Zuytdorp 1 oz Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Zuytdorp departed from Zeeland, Netherlands, in August 1711. The ship was carrying a load of freshly-minted silver coins, each of which had a date mark of 1711 and the word Zeeland, factors that would later be used to help identify the silver coins when the shipwreck was discovered and explored in the mid-20th century.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 2020 Australian Shipwreck Zuytdorp 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured in right-profile relief in a sixth-generation design that is the first on an Australian coin since 1966 to include the Queens shoulders and neckline in the portrait. Created in 2015 by Jody Clark, the design was adopted on Australian coins starting in 2018. Below the bust of the Queen is a design scene that captures the supposed aftermath of the Zuytdorps sinking. The rocky cliffs of Western Australia are captured in the design with the ship sinking in the distance as survivors struggle to reach shore.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 2020 Australian Shipwreck Zuytdorp 1 oz Silver Coin features a depiction of the Zuytdorp as it first appeared after construction. The ship is sailing on calm waters with inscriptions that are only readable if you turn the coin upside down. These include 1 oz .999 Ag and 1712, the date of its sinking. When you turn the coin upside down, you see the ship as it was when it met its fate.
History
The Zuytdorps fate remained a mystery to the world until it was discovered in the 1940s and explored in the 1950s. After departing the Netherlands in August 1711, the ship suffered losses among its crew as a result of scurvy. When it stopped on the Cape in South Africa to resupply, 100 new crewmembers were brought aboard. The ship and its crew were never seen again. Though the ship was eventually discovered and later identified in 1954, the fate of the crew remains a mystery. Many believe the few survivors that were able to make it ashore intermarried with Aboriginal tribes.
