The Austrian Philharmonic Coin series wasted little time becoming the top gold bullion series on the European continent. In just its second year of availability in 1990, it was the best-selling gold coin in Europe and the second-best in the world. Its fame only grew from there as the series not only continued as the best-selling coin in Europe, but also the best-selling coin in the world in 1992, 1995, 1996, and 2000. From 1989 to 2012, 14 million Austrian Philharmonic Gold Coins were sold for a total of 9.6 million ounces.

Obverse

Known as the Great Pipe Organ, the musical instrument you see on the obverse of the 2020 Austrian Philharmonic 1/25 oz Gold Coin is a fixture of the Musikverein. The concert hall is also known as the Golden Concert Hall and is located in the Innere Stadt neighborhood of Vienna.

Reverse

Musical instruments used by members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra are depicted together on the reverse of the 2020 Austrian Philharmonic 1/25 oz Gold Coins. The design field includes a cello, four violins, a bassoon, a harp, and a French horn.

History

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is a national treasure in Austria and is the inspiration for the design on both sides of these gold coins. While informal orchestral performances were known to take place across Vienna in the early 1830s, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra did not become a formal body until 1842.
