Queen Elizabeth II features in the fifth-generation effigy on the obverse of 2020 British Lunar Year of the Rat 1 oz Gold Coins. Jody Clark created this portrait for the mint in July 2015 and it debuted on 2016-dated coins. It captures the Queen at the age of 89 in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem. Worn predominantly during the State Opening of Parliament, the Diadem was also worn by the Queen during her procession to coronation. It was commissioned by King George IV in 1820 and features 1,333 diamonds with a weight in excess of 320 carats.
A small rat is depicted amongst flowers and other foliage on the reverse of 2020 British Lunar Year of the Rat 1 oz Gold Coins. This design depicts the in a slight right-profile relief as it stands on its hind paws with its front paws lifted slightly off the ground. As if it senses danger, the rat is looking behind itself with its snout raised up sniffing the air for clues to any potential threat. Inscriptions on this side include Year of the Rat, 2020, and 1 oz Fine Gold 999.9.
The Shengxiao Series was introduced in 2014 with Wuon-Gean Ho creating the designs for the Royal Mint of England. She was responsible for creating all of the lunar designs in the collection from 2014-2019, with the 2020 Year of the Rat design from PJ Lynch marking the first time Ms. Ho did not create a design for the series.
