The obverse field of the 2020 British Oriental Border Britannia 1 oz Gold Coin comes with an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This image was developed in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint and depicts the Queen at the age of 89. Her right-profile bust includes the George IV State Diadem Crown in the design. This particular crown was commissioned in 1820 and features an astonishing 1,333 diamonds that weigh in excess of 320 carats. The design of the crown includes crosses with roses, thistles, and shamrocks. These are the flowers of England, Scotland, and Ireland, respectively.

On the reverse side of 2020 British Oriental Border Britannia Gold Coins is Britannia. This design was created in 1987 by Philip Nathan for use on this coin series. It is a powerful, modern rendition of Britannia that puts the female personification of the country on guard to defend its interests. She wields a trident in one hand and defends the nation with a shield in the other.

British Britannia coins debuted the Oriental Border element in 2018 on both the silver and gold bullion versions of the coin. The use of this particular oriental border element is inspired directly by the British Trade Dollars issued in British colonies of the Far East during the 19th century.
