Obverse

The obverse of the 2020 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins comes with an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is the longest-reigning monarch in the history of the United Kingdom. The Royal Canadian Mint has updated her effigy of coins since her ascension in 1952. This right-profile portrait of the Queen at the age of 79 is the fourth-generation image for Canadian coins and was designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt.

Reverse

On the reverse, 2020 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/4 oz Gold Coins come with the sugar maple leaf. The official emblem of the nation, the sugar maple leaf is used on the national flag and countless other governmental and private organization emblems. This was designed in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf 1/4 oz Gold Coins were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in November 1982. The 1/4 oz gold coins were unveiled that year along with the 1/10 oz gold coins and came at the same time the mint was increasing the gold purity from .999 to .9999 content. In 2014, the RCM added radial lines to the obverse and reverse fields of the coin. Later, micro-engraved maple leaf privy marks were added to the reverse. Both security features help combat counterfeiting.
