This right-profile portrait of the Queen at the age of 79 is the fourth-generation image for Canadian coins and was designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf 1/4 oz Gold Coins were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in November 1982. The 1/4 oz gold coins were unveiled that year along with the 1/10 oz gold coins and came at the same time the mint was increasing the gold purity from .999 to .9999 content. In 2014, the RCM added radial lines to the obverse and reverse fields of the coin. Later, micro-engraved maple leaf privy marks were added to the reverse. Both security features help combat counterfeiting.
