Obverse
The obverse of the 2020 Canadian Dragon Gold Coin showcases Queen Elizabeth II in a right-profile portrait. This version, created by Susanna Blunt in 2003, stands out for not featuring a crown. It was one of the only Canadian coin designs made by a Canadian artist during the Queens reign. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, D.G. REGINA, and 10 DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse of 2020 Dragon 1/4 oz Gold Coins displays the dragons body curled into the shape of the number 8. In Chinese tradition, dragons are seen as powerful and positive figures linked to rainfall, rivers, and other bodies of water. Rather than being feared, they are respected for their strength and influence over nature. Inscriptions read CANADA, 2020, 999 FINE GOLD, and 1/4 OZ OR PUR 9999.
History
Chinese dragons are often illustrated with a blend of traits from different animals. These include a camels head, deer antlers, rabbit eyes, cow ears, a snakes neck, clam belly, carp scales, eagle claws, and tiger paws. They are commonly shown playing with a flaming pearl, which symbolizes prosperity, wisdom, or the moon.
