The region saw two Opium Wars between the United Kingdom and China, with the result of a British victory that forced open Chinese ports to outside trade. As foreign nations came to the region to take advantage of the new ports, trade dollars were issued that facilitated easier international trade. Nations with colonies in the region, such as France, often issued trade dollars to stabilize colonial monetary supplies and systems.

History
