Highlights:
Trade dollars flooded the Asia-Pacific region for various regions in the mid- to late-19th century. The region saw two Opium Wars between the United Kingdom and China, with the result of a British victory that forced open Chinese ports to outside trade. As foreign nations came to the region to take advantage of the new ports, trade dollars were issued that facilitated easier international trade. Nations with colonies in the region, such as France, often issued trade dollars to stabilize colonial monetary supplies and systems.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 2020 French Trade Dollar 1 oz Silver Coin is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. In this right-profile design, Her Majesty is shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The Queens effigy shown here was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. It was used on British coins from 1998 to 2015, Australian coins from 1999 to 2018, and still features on various Commonwealth denominations.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 2020 French Trade Dollar 1 oz Silver Coin is the image of a seated female personification. She has one hand on wheat stalks that represent the fertile farmlands of the region, while her other hand rests on an anchor that symbolizes French maritime trade throughout the region. This design is known as Piastre de commerce and resembles the American Seated Liberty silver dollar design, as well as the Statue of Liberty with her crown of sun rays.
History
France not only had extensive maritime trade routes throughout the Asia-Pacific region in the 19th century, but it also had several colonies known as French Indochina. These colonies largely consisted of what is today known as Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, as well as other Southeast Asian nations. France introduced its trade dollar in 1885 with the Piastre de commerce design to stabilize the monetary supply in its French Indochina colonies.
