In 1820, the Gold Sovereign entered regular production as a circulation coin and remained that way until World War I.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of the 2020 Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold Coin. this is the fifth-generation effigy of the Queen during her long reign. Created in 2015 by Jody Clark, it depicts the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. This crown was commissioned by George IV in the first year of his reign and is worn only during the State Opening of Parliament.

Reverse

St. George is the patron saint of England and is featured here in this design from Benedetto Pistrucci on horseback as he slays the dragon. This design was created in 1817 and featured on the sovereign through World War I. It now features on the modern bullion version of the Gold Sovereign and these new Double Sovereigns.

History

The first Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold coin was produced in 1820, but only as a pattern coin. It was not released into circulation by the Royal Mint of England until 1887 as part of the celebration of Queen Victorias Golden Jubilee. Now, to mark the 200th anniversary of the sovereigns debut in 1820 the Royal Mint is making the Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold Coin widely available for investors.
