One of the oldest gold coins in the world still in production in the same format is the Great Britain Sovereign. First introduced as such in 1817, the only major changes to come to the Great Britain Sovereign over more than 200 years of history are the portraits of the reigning British monarch on the obverse side. Provident Metals now has the 2020 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin available to you for purchase online.

  • Arrives with an individual protective plastic flip or a mint tube of 25 coins!
  • 64th coin from the Great Britain Sovereign Gold series!
  • Contains .2354 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Holds legal tender status in the United Kingdom.
  • Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse.
  • George and the dragon design on the reverse.

When you purchase the 2020 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin available here at Provident Metals, you receive a specimen that is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins in this listing come individually packaged inside of protective plastic flips, while multiples of 25 coins are packaged inside of mint tubes.

Queen Elizabeth II has featured on the obverse of the Great Britain Sovereign Gold coin since its reintroduction in 1957. The reigning monarch of Great Britain since 1952, Queen Elizabeth II is featured in right-profile relief on the obverse of the 2020 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin. This fifth-generation effigy of the Queen shows her in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Dei Gra Regina Fid Def and Elizabeth II.

St. George, the patron saint of England, is shown on the reverse side of the 2020 Great Britain Sovereign Gold coin. The original design on the British Sovereign Gold coin, Benedetto Pistrucci created this image in 1817 for the original release of the Great Britain Sovereign Gold coin. It shows St. George on horseback as he rides over the dragon to knock it down so he can slay the beast with his short sword. The only inscriptions on this face of the coin are the date mark of 2020 and the initials of Pistrucci as B.P.

England issued its first coin known as a sovereign in 1489. Then known as the English gold sovereign, it featured a monarch portrait on the obverse and varying religious design themes on the reverse. In 1603, during the reign of King James I, the production of the English sovereign ended. A similar gold coin was reintroduced in the 1660s by King Charles II, but was not specifically known as the sovereign and became known as the guinea. The guineas eventual replacement came in 1817 following the Great Recoinage of 1816 and the introduction of the modern Great Britain Sovereign Gold coin.
