Founded in 1535, the Mexican Mint is the oldest operating mint in the Western Hemisphere. The mint was founded by Conquistadors to refine and export gold and silver back to Spain from Central America. It would later serve as the primary Spanish colonial mint in the Western Hemisphere. Today, it is the sovereign mint of Mexico.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2020 Mexican Libertad 1/20 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of Winged Victory. The image of Victory was first used on a Mexican coin in 1921 when her figure was featured on the gold Centenario, a 50 Peso coin released into circulation. Since the early 2000s, the Mexican Libertad Gold Coins have used this modern vision of Victory based on the statue of the Angel of Independence created in 1910 and placed atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City in 1921.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2020 Mexican Libertad 1/20 oz Gold Coin features the modern coat of arms. The national coat of arms for Mexico includes a golden eagle battling a serpent, with the former representing Mexico in its struggle against the latter, Spain. There is a wreath below the design and an inscription of Estados Unidos Mexicanos above.

History

2020 Mexican Libertad 1/20 oz Gold Coins are likely to have a mintage around the same level as recent years. The series has averaged around 2,500 coins per year in the 1/20 oz gold weight for more than a decade now. The 2004 coin was the last to surpass this average by selling a total of 4,000 units. The 2019 coin sold a total of 1,500 in this weight, the same as the 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz coins.
