History

Mickey and Pluto are two of Disneys oldest characters. Mickey debuted in 1928 as a replacement for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a prior Disney character. Mickey appeared in a small test screening in Plane Crazy, but the public at large met him in 1928s Steamboat Willie. Pluto debuted in 1930 as an unnamed hound dog that was hunting Mickey, an escaped convict, in the animated short The Chain Gang. Since then, Pluto featured in 24 Mickey Mouse films, received his own series in 1937, and appeared in a total of 89 short films between 1930 and 1953 alone.
