From 1999 to 2000, the Philadelphia Mint was the home of the bullion American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin. The coins were originally produced at the San Francisco Mint from 1986 to 1998 and have been produced at the West Point Mint since 2001. While the Philadelphia Mint has issued special proof versions of the coin since 2000, these emergency issue 2020 American Eagle Silver Coins mark the first release of bullion coins at the mint since 2000.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2020 (P) American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Walking Liberty. The image depicts Liberty in left-profile relief walking from right to left across the surface of the coins design field. Liberty carries the branches of oak and laurel in her left hand while wearing the American flag over her shoulders. Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2020 are inscribed on this side of the coin.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2020 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. Designed in 1986 by John Mercanti, this version of the national emblem has an eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest. The eagle clutches the arrows of war in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Inscriptions of United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and 1 oz. Fine Silver One Dollar are found on this side of the coin.

History

The global pandemic that roiled stock markets in March 2020 pushed demand for gold and silver bullion through the roof. The West Point Mint ran out of 2020 American Eagle Silver Coins in mid-March and with its staff reduced, it was difficult to keep up with coining. For two weeks in April 2020, the Philadelphia Mint provided emergency production capacity to meet demand.

Ordering

These 2020 (P) American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins have Mint State 69 certifications indicating the presence of full, original mint luster and no more than two minor detracting flaws. Examples of acceptable flaws at this level include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines. First Strike labels denote the arrival of the coins for grading within the original 30-day window following release from the mint.
