Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve houses the National Historic Landmark in Salt River Bay marking the point where members of the crew of Christopher Columbus first made landfall in what is now the United States. The bay had a small Taino village dating back to the 1300s that was still occupied by the now-enslaved Tainos in 1493. The Caribs had conquered the island of Saint Croix and it was here, on November 14, 1493, that Columbus sent a longboat ashore to search for provisions and fresh water.

Obverse

On the obverse of all 2020-P Burnished ATB Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Preserve 5 oz Silver coins is the left-profile bust of President George Washington. This bust of the president was created in 1932 for the US quarter and was adapted for the larger blank of the 5 oz Burnished ATB Silver Coins. Inscriptions on this face read United States of America, Liberty, In God We Trust, and Quarter Dollar. There is also a P mint mark from the Philadelphia Mint on this face of the coin just off the R in Quarter Dollar.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2020-P Burnished ATB Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Preserve 5 oz Silver Coins includes the image of a young red mangrove tree. These trees grow in the estuarine ecosystems that exist around Salt River Bay on the island of Saint Croix. Estuarine ecosystems are created by the collision of freshwater bodies with saltwater bodies that results in brackish water.

History

Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve was established in February 1992 by the United States Congress. The park is a joint venture and cooperatively managed by the National Park Service and the Government of the Virgin Islands of the United States.
