American Coin
On the obverse side of the US Mint coin in the 2020 Proof American 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower Voyage Set is the image of a Wampanoag family. The family looks out toward the sea as the Mayflower appears on the horizon. The Wampanoag were the dominant tribe in the New England region at the time of the arrival of the pilgrims. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Patuxet, E Pluribus Unum, and $10. The reverse field of the US Mint coin in the set features the profile portraits of a male and female pilgrim voyaging to the New World on the Mayflower. The inscriptions include 1620 Plymouth 2020, In God We Trust, and United States of America.
British Coin
The obverse field of the Royal Mint coin in the 2020 Proof American 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower Voyage 2-Coin Gold Set features the modern right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 2015 by Jody Clark, it depicts the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem. Inscriptions include 25 Pounds, Elizabeth II, and D.G. Reg. F.D. On the reverse of the British coins is a depiction of the Mayflower with stylized waves at its bow. The inscriptions here read 1620, 2020, and Mayflower.
History
The Mayflowers journey to the New World actually began in London in the summer of 1620. After navigating down the Thames River, the Mayflower crossed the English Channel to Holland where it would take on board a group of exiled Puritans. After meeting up with another ship back on the south coast of England, the Mayflower would depart for the New World in September. By mid-November 1620, the Mayflower had appeared on the coast of modern-day Massachusetts.
