Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse of all 2020 Proof Australian Double Dragon 1 oz Silver Coins. Her Majesty is shown in this design in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. This image was initially created in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint of England and modified for use on Australian coins in 2018. The design for Australian coins includes the Queens neckline and shoulders, a first on Australian coins during her reign since 1966.
Reverse
Two dragons are shown on the reverse side of the 2020 Proof Australian Double Dragon 1 oz Silver Coins. These creatures take the shape and appearance of traditional Chinese depictions of the dragon as the two circle the flaming pearl at the center. Dragons are often shown in pursuit of the pearl in Chinese art as a metaphor for the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment. This design depicts the pearl swirling through the stylized clouds in the background.
History
Dragons are deeply rooted in Chinese culture and mythology. It is said that four great sea dragons defied the Jade Emperor by scooping up sea water and raining it down over the Earth to water the crops of the people after their pleas to the Jade Emperor fell on deaf ears. As punishment, the dragons were trapped to the Earth by mountains and their bodies formed the four great rivers of China.
