When postal workers deliver the mail in the 21st century, an individual simply drives up and slips it into your mailbox or walks along and puts it through the mail slot on your front door. Rarely does the postal worker ask you for payment to receive your letters and other parcels. Yet, prior to the release of the Penny Black in 1840, that was how postage worked in most public postal systems. The Pobjoy Mint routinely celebrates the anniversaries of the Penny Black with commemorative proof silver issues. Today, you have the chance to get 2020 Proof British Penny Black 5 oz Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a Pobjoy Mint black presentation box and a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Marks the 180th anniversary of the Penny Black stamp debut!
  • Contains 5 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • The nominal face value of 5 Crowns is backed by Pobjoy Mint.
  • On the obverse is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse field features Queen Victoria on the Penny Black stamp.

The Penny Black is the name given to the first adhesive stamp ever issued for use in a public postal system. The stamp was developed in the United Kingdom in 1840 and issued for official use starting May 1, 1840. The release of the Penny Black ended the system of charging recipients for mail by requiring senders to purchase the stamp in advance to apply to letters and parcels. The Penny Black established a 1 penny flat-rate fee for mailing all letters up to 14 grams of weight in the United Kingdom.

Obverse

On the obverse face of 2020 Proof British Penny Black 5 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Unique to Pobjoy Mint coinage, this right-profiles bust of the Queen depicts her down to the shoulders with a necklace on, earrings, and the George IV State Diadem Crown commissioned by King George IV in the first year of his reign in 1820.

Reverse

The reverse side of 2020 Proof British Penny Black 5 oz Silver Coins comes with the image of the worlds first adhesive stamp. The Penny Black got its name from its simple appearance and value. The cost of flat-rate postage in the day was just 1 penny and this first stamp featured a black field with a white artistic depiction of Queen Victoria in left-profile relief.

History

The Pobjoy Mint is the only private minting operation in England and is the largest family-owned, family-operated private mint in Europe. The mint has been producing coinage since 1965 and often serves as the bullion producer for nations such as Gibraltar, Fiji, the Isle of Man, Seychelles, and other small nations once or currently part of the Commonwealth.
