Obverse
Inscriptions on the obverse of this 2020 Proof Cook Islands Lost States of America Deseret Silver Coin include 1849, STATE OF DESERET and BRIGHAM YOUNG. Joel Iskowitz created the designs for both sides of this coin. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of historic Mormon leader and the first governor of Utah Brigham Young. Brigham Young was instrumental in what became the provisional state of Deseret.

Reverse
Inscriptions on the reverse include LOST STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ELIZABETH II, 1 DOLLAR, COOK ISLANDS and 2020. There’s also a small inscription just under the effigy of Her Majesty that indicates the artist for that portrait. The initials IRB stand for Ian Rank-Broadley. The unique reverse designs of coins in the Lost States of America series include the entire traditional design for the regular Cook Islands silver dollars. Above that design on this coin is a detailed depiction of bees working on their hive. Deseret is believed to be the word for honeybees in an ancient language related to the story of a people from the Book of Mormon.

History
The provisional state of Deseret has an interesting history. The land it covered encompasses most of present-day Utah and Nevada as well as part of many other surrounding states. When Brigham Young found out California was applying for statehood, he petitioned for statehood for Deseret too. Briefly, there was a movement to make a single state of California and Deseret, but the sheer size would have been threatening to other established states. There was also some concern that a huge state run by Mormons would infringe on the hard-won religious liberties of the nation. Eventually, a compromise was reached that established the state of Utah.
