The reverse side includes the inscriptions LOST STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM on the larger image, which shows an elk in the Elk River. In the background, cliffs and trees can be seen. History
In 1961, the Missouri State Highway Commission published a map to support family vacationing and tourism. It left a popular resort and some other sites of potential interest in McDonald County off the map, which led to a provisional government being created and an attempt to succeed from Missouri. The extra-legal territory was never recognized by Missouri or the federal government.
