The oral history of the Susquehannock suggests that the tribe came to a region between the Poconos, upper Delaware River, and down to the west bank of the Potomac River and north end of the Chesapeake Bay during the 13th century. The European explorers with the most contact with the tribe were the early Swedish and Dutch fur traders who exclusively traded with the Susquehannock. By the time the British took control of North America, the Susquehannock were in decline as a regional power.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2020 Proof Maryland Susquehannock Albatross 1 oz Silver Coins is the image of a tribal figure from the Susquehannock wearing traditional dress. You will find inscriptions of Susquehannock, 999 Silver, 2020, One Dollar, and One Ounce on this face of the coins.

Reverse

The reverse side of all 2020 Proof Maryland Susquehannock Albatross 1 oz Silver coins comes with the depiction of an albatross. These seabirds once roamed as far north in the world as the North Atlantic, but in the modern era are confined to the Southern Hemisphere. Only occasionally does a member of the species become isolated, alone or in a small flock, as a vagrant in the North Atlantic. Inscriptions on this side include Maryland Albatross, Jamul Sovereign Nation, and America.

History

The Susquehannock once had the only access to flintlock firearms in North America as a result of its connection with the Swedish and Dutch traders who avoided putting these guns in the hands of the Iroquois and other tribes. The arrival of the British resulted in firearms being distributed and restricted differently through trade. The Susquehannock would find their power weakened as a result and eventually absorbed into other nations in the region.
