It is only in the 21^st century that the Mexican Libertad Gold Coin Series became a steady, reliable annual release from the Mexican Mint. BU Libertads were released in three gold weights in 1981, five weights from 1991-1994, five weights in 2000, and again in five weights from 2005-present. The Proof Libertad has followed a similar pattern with a 1 oz release in 1983, a 1/2 oz release in 1989, and these 1/4 oz coins in 2004. From 2005-2011 and 2013-present, the Proof Libertad Gold Coins have been issued in all five weights annually.

Obverse

Winged Victory is depicted on the obverse of 2020 Proof Mexican Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coins. Her effigy is captured in a three-quarter profile relief as the statue at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column. Her winged figure stands leaning slightly forward with her right hand held out holding a wreath and her left hand at her back with a set of broken chains. The Inscriptions on this face of the coin include 1/4 Onza, Oro Puro, 2020 Ley .999, and the mint mark of the Mexican Mint as OM.

Reverse

Mexicos coat of arms is featured on the reverse of 2020 Proof Mexican Libertad Gold Coins. The modern coat of arms from Mexico comes with a powerful golden eagle with its wings flexed back as its talons and beak wrestle a rattlesnake. The eagle is perched on the prickly pear cactus with a wreath of oak and laurel below. Estados Unidos Mexicanos is inscribed above the image of the eagle and the coins border features an Aztec-inspired design element.

History

As of the 2020 release of the Proof Mexican Libertad Gold Coin, there have been 17 issues of the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz coins and 16 issues of the 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins. The 1/4 oz coin is the only one of the coins with 17 issues that started one year earlier as it was first issued in 2004 and has been issued alongside all other five weights since 2005. There are no coins in this series with a 2012 date mark.
