History

Before Europeans began to arrive in the New World, the Tuscarora had migrated from their ancestral homeland along the Great Lakes in New York and Ontario to North Carolina. Following the 1711-1713 Tuscarora War between English colonists and allied tribes, the Tuscarora largely migrated out of North Carolina by the time of the American Revolution. During the American Revolution, the Tuscarora had moved to New York and allied with the Iroquois with the assistance of the Oneida. These groups of Tuscarora allied with the colonists and remain in this region to this day. Some Tuscarora had conversely allied with the British during the war, and fled to Ontario, Canada to resettle in the region following the war.
