Obverse

History
These coins are minted by the Royal Australian Mint, which is also responsible for creating all of the circulating coins in Australia. The mint is located in Canberra, Australia, and it is the first mint in the country to not be associated with the United Kingdoms Royal Mint.
According to Chinese legend, the Jade Emperor asked twelve animals to race across the river. By using his wit, the rat was able to cross the river before all of the other animals. For this reason, the Year of the Rat honors the first animal in the twelve-year lunar calendar. People who are born in the Year of the Rat are said to be witty, smart, clever, persuasive, and self-aware.
