Both sides of the 2020 Proof South African Krugerrand 1 oz Silver Coin have historic coin designs that date back to at least the beginning of the broader Krugerrand Gold Coin series in 1967. Coert Steynberg created the design for the reverse, that of the Springbok antelope, in 1967 for the gold coin. Otto Schultz created the left-profile bust of Paul Kruger for the obverse using an 1892 portrait of Kruger created for South African Pound denominations in the late 19^th century.

Obverse

Paul Kruger, known as Oom Paul in Afrikaans, is featured in left-profile relief on the obverse of the 2020 Proof South African Krugerrand 1 oz Silver Coin. This design is based on a portrait used on dies for South African Pound coins issued during Krugers era in office as President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900.

Reverse

The Springbok antelope is prominent throughout several nations at the southern tip of the African continent, but is closely associated with modern South Africa as the official emblem of the country. It is depicted here in Steynbergs original design, but was modernized slightly for the series in 1984 along with the obverse bust of Paul Kruger.

History

When the South African Mint issued the first South African Silver Krugerrands, it did so in 2017 as part of the 50^th-anniversary celebration. That year saw a Premium Uncirculated bullion coin issued along with a proof silver coin. The coins were so popular that a bullion and proof version remains available each year.
