The symbol features an American bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest and a ribbon in its beak that reads E Pluribus Unum. The eagle’s talons clutch the olive branch of peace and arrows of war. Above its head is a triangular cluster of 13 stars. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include United States of America and 1 oz Fine Silver One Dollar.

History

The American Eagle Silver Coin was introduced in 1986 by the US Mint and originally struck at the branch facility at the San Francisco Mint from 1986 to 1998. Since 2011, when supplemental coining is required to meet demand for the Silver Eagle, the San Francisco Mint has stepped forward to produce additional volumes of the coin.
