The design of the Serpent of Milan dates back to 1075 when Ariprando Visconti founded the House of Visconti. The archbishop Ottone was the first individual from the House of Visconti to directly rule Milan when he took control of the city away from the Della Torre family nearly 200 years after Visconti founded the house. The House of Visconti ruled Milan from 1277 to 1447.
