Obverse

The Somali Coat of Arms is featured on the obverse of the 2020 Somalia Elephant 1/2 Gram Gold Coins. This national symbol includes a crowned shield with a background of horizontal lines and a single star in the center. This is reflective of the national flag that boasts a single white star on a field of blue. The shield here is supported by a leopard on either side with fern leaves and spears below.

Reverse

African bush elephants are depicted on the reverse face of 2020 Somalia Elephant 1/2 Gram Gold Coins. These two African bush elephants are shown facing inward toward each other with the specter of Mount Kilimanjaro looming in the background field. Inscriptions on this face include African Wildlife, Elephant, and 1/2 Gram Au 9999.

History

The African Wildlife Series has been available since 1999 when it was the Zambian Elephant Series. Dating back to 2004, the series has been released with the same design focus on the reverse as the Somalia Elephant Series bearing the Somali Coat of Arms on the obverse. The collection highlights the threatened species, the African bush elephant. This is the largest living terrestrial mammal in the world today.
