African bush elephants are one of two subspecies of African elephants still alive today on the African continent. Although the two are believed to have diverged genetically as recently as 2.6 million years ago, it is believed that the two may have shared genes and co-mingled in the savanna-forest convergence zones on the continent in ancient times. Obverse

History

The African Wildlife Series was introduced in 1999 by the Bavarian State Mint as the Zambian Elephant Series. The collection originally featured only 1 oz coins in silver and gold. Today, the Somalia Elephant Series features fractional weights in both metals, several weights above 1 oz in silver, and a platinum coin. The fractional-gold coins go down as small as 1/25 and 1/50 oz gold.
