Somalia Elephant coins from the Bavarian State Mint feature silver, gold, and platinum bullion options. 2016 was one of the most significant years for the series as metal content was increased to .9999 purity, new silver and gold weights were added, and a platinum bullion coin was introduced. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 2020 Somalia Elephant 1/2 oz Gold Coins from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with individual plastic capsules or tubes of 20 coins!
  • 17th year of availability for the Somalia Elephant coins!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition.
  • The face value is set at 500 Somali Shillings.
  • Somali coat of arms features on the obverse.
  • Two African bush elephants depicted on the reverse.

African bush elephants are one of two subspecies of African elephants still alive today on the African continent. Although the two are believed to have diverged genetically as recently as 2.6 million years ago, it is believed that the two may have shared genes and co-mingled in the savanna-forest convergence zones on the continent in ancient times. In 21 different locations on the continent, indications of hybrids between the two have been found.

Obverse

For the obverse of 2020 Somalia Elephant Gold Coins, there is the Somali coat of arms. The seal includes a crowned shield in the center with a background field of horizontal lines with a single star. There is a leopard on either side of the shield to support it and fern leaves crossing with spears below.

Reverse

In the reverse design, 2020 Somalia Elephant 1/2 oz Gold Coins feature the image of two adult African bush elephants. The duo looks inward toward one another and both have long tusks. The growth of the tusks on an African elephant is indicative of the age of the creature, with long tusks indicating a long lifespan.

History

The African Wildlife Series was introduced in 1999 by the Bavarian State Mint as the Zambian Elephant Series. The collection originally featured only 1 oz coins in silver and gold. Today, the Somalia Elephant Series features fractional weights in both metals, several weights above 1 oz in silver, and a platinum coin. The fractional-gold coins go down as small as 1/25 and 1/50 oz gold.
