The design includes a crowned shield in the center supported by leopards on either side of the shield. Two fern leaves and spears cross below the shield. On the surface of the shield, you will find a single star set against a background of horizontal lines. The use of the star reflects the national flag design that uses a blue field with a single white star.

Reverse

The reverse of 2020 Somalia Elephant 1/4 oz Gold Coins bears the image of two adult African bush elephants, the largest land mammals in the world. The two elephants are depicted in side-profile relief looking in toward one another. The elephants both have long tusks, a sign of their advanced age. In the distant background, Africas highest peak at Mount Kilimanjaro rises toward the sky.

History

Somalia Elephant coins began as the Zambian Elephant in 1999. From 1999 to 2003, the Bavarian State Mint issued the coins for Zambia before switching to Somalia in 2004. Throughout the course of its history, including the switch in issuing nations, the series has offered new designs of the African elephant each year.
