African bush elephants are closely related to their African forest elephant cousins, as well as the Asian elephant and the ancient Woolly Mammoth. DNA sequencing has shown that African bush and forest elephants began to diverge from one another between 2.6 and 5.6 million years ago. The African elephant species collectively diverged from the Asian elephant and Woolly Mammoth between 2.5 and 5.4 million years ago.

The design includes a crowned shield supported on either side by a leopard. There are crossed fern leaves and spears below the shield. The pair are viewed in side profile portrait with only the heads visible in the design field. The elephants look inward toward one another with the towering peak of Mount Kilimanjaro visible between the two creatures in the distance.

History

Somalia Elephant silver coins were originally available only in 1 oz silver with .999 pure silver content and annual mintage caps. When the Great Recession set in, the demand for silver resulted in the end of mintage caps in this series. In 2016, the Bavarian State Mint responded to the continued popularity of the Somalia Elephant silver series with increased .9999 pure silver content and new weights. Among those new weights, the 1 kilo silver coin now stands as the largest coin in the collection.
