There are only three remaining species of elephant alive in the world today. All three rank as the largest land mammals, with two of the three native to the African continent. The African bush elephant depicted in the Somalia Elephant bullion coin series is the largest in the world. The African forest elephant is the third-largest land mammal. The Asian elephant ranks as the second-largest land mammal.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2020 Somalia Elephant 2 oz Silver Coins is the image of the coat of arms for the Somali Republic, known simply as Somalia. The crowned shield has a background field of horizontal lines with a single star in the center. This is reminiscent of the national flag which bears a field of blue with a single white star. The shield is supported on either side by a leopard with fern leaves and spears crossed below.

Reverse

The reverse of 2020 Somalia Elephant 2 oz Silver Coins features two adult elephants facing inward at one another with the specter of Mount Kilimanjaro looming in the distant background. The two elephants are mature adults as noted by the length of their tusks. Mount Kilimanjaro in the background is Africas highest mountain peak.

History

African Wildlife Series Elephant Coins were first introduced by the Bavarian State Mint in 1999 as the Zambian Elephant Series. Those coins featured fresh designs of the African elephant on the reverse each year. That design trend continued after the 2004 swap to Somalia as the nation of issue for the coins.
