Barbara Bush become interested in literacy while serving as Second Lady during the Reagan presidency. Having coached her son Neil, who was diagnosed with dyslexia, Barbara became committed to a family-centered approach to reading education. In 1989, she founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, which to this date has run over 1500 literacy programs across the country.
