Obverse
Lady Liberty is found on the obverse of the 2021 American Eagle Gold Type 2 Coins. This iconic image of Liberty was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. It is a full-length figure of Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The field includes the U.S. Capitol Building in the background with sun rays and a ring of 50 stars. Inscriptions on this face read LIBERTY and 2021.
Reverse
An all-new depiction of the American bald eagle is featured on the reverse of 2021 American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Type 2 Coins. This design was created in 2020 by Jennie Norris and features the bald eagle in left-profile relief. The plumage of the bird is captured in exceptional detail with its hooked beak and sharp gaze also depicted. Inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 5 DOLLARS.
History
The American Eagle Gold Coin has only once before seen a change to its visuals and it was minor. In 1992, the mint changed from Roman numerals for the date marks to Arabic numerals.
