The coins in the silver and gold series have featured the same combination of obverse and reverse images since 1986 when the respective series debuted. American Eagle Gold Coins have been issued in two phases in 2021. The US Mint was not ready to strike the new reverse design when 2021 coining started in late 2020, so it was decided to release the coins with the original design combinations until mid-2021. With the new dies ready, the US Mint has transitioned its coining presses in preparation for large-scale production of the Type 2 designs with the new reverse design of the eagle.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2021 American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coins is the effigy of Lady Liberty. The design was first used on the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin from 1907 to 1933 after being designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Libertys figure is framed by rays of sunshine emerging on the horizon behind her with a ring of 50 stars encircling the design field. As Liberty walks forward, the U.S. Capitol Building is visible at her feet while she holds up a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The inscriptions on this face include Liberty and 2021.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2021 American Eagle Gold Type 2 Coins comes with the new bald eagle design from Jennie Norris. The new, highly detailed image captures all of the aspects of the bald eagles plumage and physical features brilliantly. Inscriptions read United States of America, In God We Trust, E Pluribus Unum, and 1/10 oz. Fine Gold – 5 Dollars.

History

Jennie Norris is one of a number of artists working with the US Mint in its Artistic Infusion Program. The new reverse design for the American Eagle Gold Series is her first major contribution to the US Mint.
