The first significant change of any type to come to the American Eagle Gold Coins came in 1992. From 1986 to 1991, the US Mint had inscribed the date marks on the obverse of the coins using Roman numerals. In 1992, the mint opted to switch from this format to Arabic numerals. In 2021, the US Mint offers the first change in the design with a new reverse element coming by mid-year.

Obverse

For the obverse field of 2021 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins, the US Mint features the remastered image of Lady Liberty that was originally created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. President Theodore Roosevelt personally approached Saint-Gaudens about redesigning American coins to move away from Greek and Roman imagery to offer something distinctly representative of Americas growing power. The image of this powerful Liberty shows her independent figure marching forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. There are inscriptions on this face of Liberty and 2021.

Reverse

In the reverse design element, the 2021 American Eagle Gold Coin features a family of American bald eagles. This design was created just for this series in 1986 by Miley Busiek. The image includes a male eagle in flight above the nest, with a female and a hatchling in the nest. History

For the 35^th anniversary of the series, the US Mint will deliver new reverse designs. The new images will begin to appear on 2021-dated American Eagle Gold Coins struck after mid-year.
