The all-new bald eagle design on the reverse debuts in mid-2021 with the release of Type 2 coins. Obverse
Lady Liberty graces the obverse side of 2021 American Eagle Gold Coins. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the image shows Libertys full-length figure in front-facing relief as she strides forward in the design element. She holds up a torch in her right hand to light the way, she carries an olive branch of peace in her left hand. The U.S. Capitol Building is visible at her feet with rays of sunshine in the background and a ring of 50 stars around the field. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read LIBERTY and 2021.
Reverse
An American bald eagle is present on the reverse field of the 2021 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins. This new vision of the bald eagle was developed by Jennie Norris and chosen from more than 30 different designs to be the new face of the American Eagle Gold Coin Series from 2021 onward. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.
History
The new reverse design element is the first major overhaul in the visual appearance of American Eagle Gold Coins. The only previous design change was minor and came in 1992. That year saw the date marks changed from Roman numerals to Arabic numerals.
