For the first time in the history of the series, one of the primary design elements was replaced with a new image. Both the American Eagle 1 oz gold and 1 oz silver coins received new reverse designs with the issue of Type 2 coins in 2021. Obverse
The obverse of 2021 American Eagle Gold Type 2 Coins features Lady Liberty. This design was created in 1907 and features Liberty in front-facing relief with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol Building and sun rays are present behind her figure with a ring of 50 stars around the design element. The stars, torch, sun rays, and Capitol Building have been enhanced to match the original imagery as Saint-Gaudens intended. Inscriptions on this field include LIBERTY and 2021.
Reverse
On the reverse field of 2021 American Eagle 1 oz Gold Type 2 Coins. The image of the bald eagle in left-profile relief has incredible levels of detail and was created by Jennie Norris. Ms. Norris is a member of the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program and her bald eagle design was chosen from more than 30 other possible images to be the new face of the American Eagle Gold Coin.
History
The 2021 American Eagle release is the 35th anniversary for the American Eagle Series. After issuing the original design combinations in early 2021, the US Mint transitioned its coining presses to use the new dies and released the coins with the new reverse.
