The year 2021 marked the 35th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle, and the United States Mint recognized the milestone with two separate designs. The Type 1 release continued the original reverse by John Mercanti, while the Type 2 coin introduced a new reverse from Emily Damstra. Each 2021 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin is certified Mint State 70 by NGC and secured in a plastic slab. The West Point Core label honors the role of the West Point Mint in producing Silver Eagles. MS70 coins display full luster with no visible imperfections. First Day of Issue coins were submitted for grading within 24 hours of release.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2021 American Eagle Silver Coin features the timeless Walking Liberty design from Adolph A. Weinman. First used in 1916, this image presents Liberty moving toward the sunrise with the American flag draped around her. The design has long been associated with the Silver Eagle series. In 2021, the Mint added Weinmans AW initials to the lower-right area of the obverse. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2021.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 2021 Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin showcases Emily Damstras bald eagle design. The Mint reviewed dozens of design options before selecting this image of an eagle descending with an oak branch. It replaced the heraldic eagle created by John Mercanti, which had appeared on the Silver Eagle since the series began in 1986. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER.
History
During 2021, the Mint produced Type 1 coins early in the year before temporarily stopping production in June to prepare for the new reverse. After the changeover, Type 2 coins were struck for the remainder of the year. The Gold Eagle series underwent a similar update during this anniversary year.
