After 35 years, the United States Mint said goodbye to the heraldic eagle from John Mercanti, and hello to the Emily Danstra flying eagle design. Type 1 coins in 2021 were issued in the first half of 2021 and feature the design used since 1986 while Type 2 coins, issued in the latter half of 2021, depict the new design. Obverse
2021 Eagle 1 oz Silver Type 2 Coins depict the well-known Walking Liberty design created by Adolph A. Weinman. Believed to be inspired by La Semeuse, this image has been featured on US Mint coins since the 1916 half-dollar. This image shows Liberty walking towards the sunset wearing an American flag whilst holding a bundle of oak branches. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 2021, and AW.
Reverse
The brand-new bald eagle design bears the reverse field of 2021 America Eagle Silver Type 2 Coins. This Emily Danstra design features a flying bald eagle with an oak branch in its talons. This new design was first introduced on 2021 Type 2 coins in this series. Inscriptions on this field read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, 1 OZ, FINE SILVER, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
History
Emily Danstra is the designer of the new American Eagle Silver Type 2 Coins. Danstra has an M.F.A from the University of Michigan. Her work can be seen on other designs struck by the United States Mint such as the iconic Women on their American Women Quarter Series.
